Strobist at CERN

The CERN Photo Club is organizing a seminar about photography and lighting by renowned photographer David Hobby a.k.a. Strobist. See strobist.com for more on his work, previous seminars and online tutorials.

The intended audience is amateur and professional photographers interested in using all kinds of light in photography, especially off-camera lighting. Expensive equipment is not needed, as you will see (although you are welcome to bring your camera gear along). Please note that the seminar will be given in English.

Useful information

CERN on-site services accept cash in Swiss francs (CHF). Although CERN is on the border of Switzerland and France, if you want to go out in the evening, that would be in Geneva, Switzerland, where the local currency is CHF. All major credit cards are accepted throughout the city (but not in the CERN cafeteria).

Accommodation

If you are lucky, you might be able to book a room in one of our (very busy) on-site hotels.  Please visit the Housing Service for more information. Otherwise, you can choose from hotels near CERN or downtown GenevaThis list of hotel prices may be also useful, even if not guaranteed to be 100% accurate (mention CERN and the event when you make your room reservation and you may get a discount.)

If you come by car, the cheapest hotel nearby CERN is Formule 1 in France, but it is situated in a rural area with minimal public transport.

The cheapest accommodation in Geneva is probably the City Hostel.

Travel

You can get to Geneva various ways.  For detailed description, please see How to get to CERN?

In any case, PLEASE MAKE SURE that you have transportation from your room to CERN - in nearby France public transportation is sparse at best. You can check http://www.tpg.ch for the Swiss public transport company (some lines go across the border).

Eating out

For the seminar, we have an on-site self-service restaurant where various meals including vegetarian are available for around CHF10. Otherwise Geneva has a wide range of very nice restaurants where you can get your daily nutrition.

Sightseeing

If you'd like to visit CERN and learn more about the science done here, please check directly with the CERN Visits Service about signing up for a free tour.
